Saar

2 covers, 1932 and 1933

Saar: These covers represents two periods of the Saarland’s chequered history. The earlier cover, from Staarbruck to Paris, marks the post-WW1 Territory of the Saar Basin. The later cover marks the Referendum that was to reunite the post WWII Saar Protectorate with (West) Germany. The later cover is more colourful and interesting, having the ‘Referendum Day’ cachet (both cancelled on the Day), above a design of the British Airways Corporation) passenger aircraft (recognisable by the logo on the plane). A BOAC plane in this context is puzzling and the cover is not an official FDC (It lacks the word ‘erstagg’ in the cancel). There are also no good matches online, and for these reasons, it must be regarded as doubtful.
